Fitness and Aerial Acrobatics on Silks

Many people do not begin aerial acrobatics, often known as aerial dancing because they think they need to be flexible and strong. Well, you do have to have both, but you can build these attributes by doing aerial acrobatics. In our classes, we build on your strengths. We want you to have success and to have fun. We use a combination of movement awareness based in the Feldenkrais approach, also some movements from Pilates and some from dance, gymnastics, and Yoga.

You will build fitness throughout your physique because you are using all of your muscle groups. It is a good work-out and a way to be creative too.

Aerial Silks for Fitness

Many people ask if aerial acrobatics is good to do to get into shape. Yes, it is. You will build strength and  muscle tone and have fun doing both. To get into shape for aerial work, it is best to work on your upper body strength and core conditioning.

Taking a Pilates class, Feldenkrais class, or dance class is great.

If you are interested in preparation for class, the Aerial Fabric Acrobatics Conditioning Companion is a great way to start. You can also come to the Introduction to Aerial Arts offered on Thursday nights. Remember to sign up ahead of time though.

Thanks and see hope to see you in class!

Difference Between Tricot & Interlock

Many people ask, what is the difference between using Tricot for aerial dance and aerial acrobatics versus using interlock fabric. The Tricot stretches along the width and therefore has less give along the length. If it is hung from a ceiling height of more than 15 feet however, it will seem to have some stretch or give to it. Tricot aerial fabric, or aerial silk is also typically 109″ wide and can have a shine to the surface, or have a matte finish.

The interlock fabric is  60″ wide, and 70 Denier. It  stretches along the width and the length. The stretch varies depending on the color. Also, in ceiling heights of over 15 feet, it can be even more stretchy. In our experience, the color with the medium level of stretch is the red, and the least amount of stretch is the royal blue.

Many aerial silk performers or aerial dancers like using the interlock. For the beginning aerialist, the Tricot is usually preferred.

Both types of fabric or silks, as they are called are very strong, weight tests have shown that the fabric can withstand 3,000 pounds of force. The fabric will tear if snagged and it is best to not wear jewelry when on the silks. Long fingernails or toe nails can also damage the fabric. The matte tricot is a looser weave 40 Denier and is not used for aerial hammock. Also, the interlock is usually not used for aerial hammock. The Tricot with 60 Denier is usually used for aerial hammock.

Interlock aerial fabric, or aerial silks is 100% Polyester. Tricot is 100% nylon. The Interlock is naturally fire resistant. However, for fire resistance, a coating needs to be applied to the fabric. It may not respond as well then when used for aerial acrobatic or aerial dancing.

Revision to Thursday Nights

We will offer a teacher skill share so the instructors with Aerial Fabric Acrobatics and the teachers who work with other schools can share skills. At the same time, but in a different part of the gym, there will be an open work-out for all other aerialists who are at the beginning or intermediate level.

It should make for a good opportunity for everyone. There will be no formal teaching, except for the Introduction to Aerial Arts class held for those interested in beginning their learning with aerial silks, aerial hoop and aerial hammock.

Thursday nights will be lots of fun!

New Performer at the Church

Grace Ramsey did her first aerial fabric show at the Church nightclub last night October 29, 2010. She did a fantastic job!

Grace also created a Facebook page: Ladies at the Church since she is now officially  one of the aerial performers at the Church. Apparently, our aerialists are known by club goers as the Ladies  at the Church. There have been many performers who have done shows in this wonderful space since 2002.

Classses

Our classes offer a wide variety of teaching styles to meet the needs of our students at all levels. Our curriculum is skill based so the positions you learn in the lower levels prepare you for the more difficult poses and drops in the upper levels.

We offer the option to do an open work out rather than a class if you need to practice what you already know.  Come join us on either Sunday night or Wednesday night for a class or open work-out.

Instructional DVD

We have been developing our curriculum for six years, and it is finally ready to go to the copyright office, including the Fabric Instructional DVDs. The most difficult process has been finalizing the instructional DVDs and they are done! Thanks to Tanya, Lynn, and David! David has been our  videographer and editor. Tanya and Lynn have developed the curriculum and were filmed for the DVD.

We filmed it to help those who want to learn fabric, but are not close to a school and for those aerialists in our classes who want to learn faster when in class. Soon our DVDs will be available on the web site along with the Conditioning Companion and the Workshops by Rebekah Leach.
